Alternatives was a great success. I met so many wonderful mental health activists, advocates, and survivors. What an awesome opportunity for Sent(a)Mental Studios and the Mental (St)ealth Project. We received over 50 submissions to the Mental (St)ealth Project and I hope to be uploading images of some of that artwork soon. In the meantime here are a couple photos from the Open Studio the Sent(a)Mental Studios helped facilitate. love, dylan a found can and recent attention to suicides 10/07/2010
![]() 10.07.10 (c) dylan scholinski i love accidents, mistakes, random creative acts, etc. i am always collecting beautiful (wabi sabi) type things... that some may call garbage. while it is true that a lot of the things i collect for this series are "throw-away" objects or collected images of what many disregard in there travels - what i see is treasure, beauty, transition... opportunity. valuable objects that are worthy of a 2nd look/chance. today i found this can and thought i'd just try scanning it rather that taking a photo. this is what i got... and i love the random selections of light and focus. i have been thinking and feeling a lot recently in regards to the recent attention drawn to suicide, bullying, queerness and youth. i am moved by peoples sudden and long overdue interest. however this is not a new phenomena and the solution is not that we need people to sweep in and save us from ourselves. from where i have been sitting on this subject - as a survivor of multiple attempts and thought of suicide over the years - my feelings as a "throw away" youth - and more currently as the witness/founder of the sent(a)mental studios memorial to LGBTIQA suicides and youth projects - we not only need witnesses that will see the value of us as ourselves... but that will also participate in reflecting that value back to us... AT ALL TIMES. protect us from the bullies, celebrate us in our schools and communities, advocate for uni-sex bathrooms... and don't wait for someone to come out as queer or kill themselves in your community to feel its time to start this process. BE AN ALLY NOW. so i think about this can that i found... and if everyone would witness it as the beautiful thing that it has become - and stop projecting this idea of it being garbage and less valuable... but to see the value of it as itself.... well, wouldn't that be great. love to everyone. dylan ALTERNATIVES 2010 “Promoting Wellness Through Social Justice” "Promoviendo Bienestar por medio de Justicia Social" The national mental health conference organized by and for mental health consumers and survivors will be held Wednesday, September 29 - Sunday, October 3, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency, 11999 Harbor Blvd., Anaheim/Garden Grove, California 92840 (Hyatt reservations - 800-233-1234). hello all, i am so sorry i've been so out of touch. there has been much going on with having moved the studio, beginning a new school year with students, settling into new space, and much more. so here i am putting finishing touches on the new space and putting off posting because i have so much to say, don't know where to start - and then fear another month will go by. so please bear with me... over the next couple of weeks i will post many different bits of info, photos, updated wish-lists, etc... so check back. thanks so much love, dylan Dear Sent(a)Mental Friends, Family, and Supporters - I am writing you today to inform you that I have given notice and will be moving out of The Other Side Arts by Aug. 1st. I have been here at TOSA Denver for 4 years and while this has been an awesome experience I have recently been presented with an opportunity that I cannot pass up. Sent(a)Mental Studios (as well as the Denver Zine Library) will be moving to 27 Social Centre (about 1 mile from TOSA) with P&L Printing, a local union print shop, and various other organizations. For me this is an amazing opportunity for SAM Studios to be in community with like minded people, organizations and politics... as well as an affordable, street level and accessible space. If you are interested in more information as to the future for SAM Studios email or talk with me personally and I can fill you in on the details. In addition, most of you are aware that I have serious back issues and that I am in need of assistance and rely heavily on community to help support me in this move. See the proposed schedule below for packing and moving. Look it over and please contact me with any availability so i can begin filling in the schedule. THE SAM STUDIO MOVE RAFFLE !!!! What this means is that for every hour you help out (either building walls, packing, and/or moving) you get 2 raffle tickets to put towards a drawing from the MonuMental Manhattan - Crime Scene Series (pictured and linked here). So really, the more you help the better your chances. So, again... check the schedule below and let me know what you might be able to do. Thanks in advance... your support always means so much. I look forward to working with you all in the future. love, dylan email: dylanscholinski@aol.com website: www.sentamentalstudios.com ***************************************** MAIN HELP SCHEDULE - Building Walls for DZL and SAM Studios --- JULY 11th 10 am - 4pm (or later if necessary) 2727 West 27th Ave, Denver PACKING and MOVING MAIN PACKING - TUES JULY 6th - FRIDAY JULY 16th MAIN MOVING DAY - SAT JULY 17TH 10am to When done for day... * Food, Juice and Water Provided. Teen Art Exhibit and Benefit Helps Prevent Teen Suicide Teens Choosing Life, Choosing Hope Voz y Corazón - meaning voice and heart- is a suicide prevention and mentoring program designed to change how Latina youth think and feel about themselves. And it is working! Alarming national statistics indicate that Hispanic high school girls are most likely to seriously consider and attempt suicide. Latina youth in Denver are no exception. Voz y Corazón is a free, culturally responsive support, education, and prevention program designed for Latina youth. It teaches them how to recognize and respond to signs of suicide in themselves and their peers. Volunteers mentor the teens and help them with self-expression through artwork and with developing a healthy bi-cultural identity. Teens are trained as gatekeepers' to support their peers who may be in trouble. "I have many friends that need help and do drugs and try suicide. I want to help them," says one teen participant. Voz y Corazón Teen Art Show and Benefit gives the teens a chance to showcase their art work and creativity. The teen's art work will be professionally displayed at the Red Line Art for viewing and certain pieces will be available for purchase. The public is invited. All donations support this important program.
